Ok so our DS is still only 10.3.1 but we have it as a dual boot with Symphony V5.5 and that combination works well for us. Today I had a client who was running MC V5.5 and sending Avid DNX185 content and sequences to us to AFE into DS for grading. Within the limits of what the DS will take across from MC it's been fine. They have recently upgraded to MC V6 and send a new project over. To be safe I opened the project in our MC V5.5 and checked everything was ok. It looked fine. Some graded shots all looked ok. did the AFE from MC V5.5 (3 sequences) and moved the MXF media over. Opened the…

I am new to Avid DS, working on version 10.5.2 for about a month now. My problem is when exporting any of my current Symphony projects as an AFE all I can see is my titles on the timeline and all the clips say 'media not available' I would imagine it's something obvious i'm missing, but right now I can't seem to see the wood for the trees! My Symphony is 6.01 and the DS is 10.5.2 running on Windows 7 X64 Any advice would be gratefully received as right now I'm ready to bounce my head off the monitor! cheers Rich

We recently bought a AVID Studio for PC. We've been looking forward to enjoy this, but uforntunately we experiance some odd problems or bugs (?). For about 50% of the uploaded videos the audio is out of sync. The sound packs at the end of each sequence. As a concequence my doughter age 5 sounds like a death metal band (very deep voice and hard to understand) until the end of the sequence where she starts sounding like Chip & Dale.  The thing is, the videofiles play perfect in all other videoprograms, but not in Avid Studio. Any ideas???
  • Only Audio Exports, No Video

    17 Apr 2012 | 11:56 am
Newbee question, perhaps a simple answer? Just started using Avid Studio trial. I can import and edit M2TS, 1080p, 60fps files, no problem. The edited video displays correctly in the Avid Video Exporter window, jog and shuttle work fine. But ANY exported video format results in a very small, audio ONLY file - NO Video, just a gray screen. I would greatly appreciate any guidance on this issue. Thanks
  • Resizing Video, Blurring Faces in Avid Studio

I am a new Avid Studio user, which I use on my HP laptop. I know this must be simple, but how do you resize video in Avid Studio? For the life of me can’t figure out how to simply resize the video and then move it left or right. I have edited with Avid Composers in the past, but am now editing on a much smaller scale on my laptop.   Also, how to you blur faces? I have figured out how to use the blur tool, but right now it’s just a square or rectangle. Can it be circular? And how do I use key frames in order to make it move? Most times the people are moving, and I want the…

Hello. We have a lot of RED material from a movie transcoded in 36 NDxHD The original media from RED is 4k 2.33 format The RED material was set (i think, by the AVID default settings) in "center keep size", so it crop a bit from sides. We transcode all the material and then realize it was croping part of the image. If we put the RED material in Pillarbox/Letterbox by reformat in the bin column menu, but when we try to make the same with the MXF files, the reformat setting changed to "Stretch" and if we change it doesn´t change in the image, like it was compresed with…

Hello, I'm looking for some advice on best way to do this: Currently we are 1 week into SD project: Film @ 24fps, telecine @ 25fps digibeta, sound BWAV with 25fps TC, 24p pal project. Sound sync in Avid, version 4.05   We are going to join the 21st century and switch to HD! Film @ 24, HDCam @ 24, avid @ 1080p / DNX115, lovely! My questions are:   1. is there any way to avoid re-syncing from scratch and eye matching everything that has been cut so far (I'm presuming not)?  2. can the sound recordist keep recording with TC25 on BWAVS and can i keep the TC at 25 on import.
  • Edited gets screwed by DP... story at 11.

editing a 15min short film that was shot on 2 cannon Ti cameras. at the end of the second day the DP noticed that cam 2 was set to 29.97 while camera 1 at 23.98.  Due to the nature of this film I prefer the second camera on the vast majority of the takes. We have finished the first cut of the film and the footage isn't a problem yet. However when I export the seq as an AAF for ProTools I run into trouble. The AAF Export always has issues and will export some tracks but not all, with the framerate being the issue. What is the best way to deal with this? (loaded question) …

  • 35mm 2/3 perf, 16mm Avid Project?

    9 Apr 2012 | 10:54 am
Hi All I'll attempt to keep this brief. I'm assisting a show shooting 35mm 3perf/2perf (2.40) and some 16mm. I'm concerned about how one tracks 3 and 2 perf material in one project. On Safe House we shot 35mm 4 and 3 perf and captured the 3 perf material in a 3 perf project and then we moved the bins to the  4 perf project. Not sure this is possible with a 2/3 perf project? I've also read that one can create a 3perf project and then either modify the 2 perf ale by changing the  KN Start to Ink Number or by duplicating the KN Start (once captured) into to Ink Number…

...and it seems to be free for people running Squeeze 8, there's a catch however, as it comes in two flavours: plain Squeeze and Squeeze Pro, the latter being a paid upgrade, the former missing a bunch of features, being DNxHD encoding one of the missing features, see this chart. As I understand it Squeeze 8.5 does not encode straight DNxHD files, but it still should be possible to encode DNxHD QuickTime files, or else the plain Squeeze wouldn't be a good companion to MC; can anyone confirm this?

So it seems that Rovi, who purchased Roxio along with Parent Sonic Solutions has sold the consumer segment of Roxio to Corel. Scenarist, and BD Powerstation has remained with Rovi. BD Powerstation sells for around $1400us, uses the core GUI of the Legacy App, DVDit, adds some pro tools. No mention of the base product DVDitHD. Development of the base product has been stagnant for some time...another reason to sniff around CS6 (Encore) ?

Here’s a heady and novel idea, a law that would do the following: Force websites to tell consumers why their data is being collected and retain it only as long as necessary. If data is stolen, require notification within 24 hours. Offer consumers the right to move their data from one service to another. Create [...]

  • Plot Device Wins a Webby!

    Aharon Rabinowitz
    1 May 2012 | 10:14 am
Well… it happened. Plot Device won the Webby for best editing. I’ll keep this short, because we are all, honestly, stunned. Not that we didn’t think that director Seth Worley’s fantastic cutting/storytelling wasn’t worthy of an award, but when you go up against the kind of competition we had, you kind of just say “It’s nice to be nominated” so you can sleep at night. The team at Red Giant is ridiculously proud of Seth and his crew (a crew I consider myself lucky to have been a part of). But, frankly, even without the award, we were already…

  • VIDEO OUT OF PPRO CS6 – SWITCHING MONITORING FORMAT

    shaneross
    9 May 2012 | 7:50 pm
It started with this thread on the Adobe forums.  And then Mike Nichols (@TheEditDoctor) did this video showing the issue he was having with his Blackmagic card and CS6…and how it wouldn’t act like it does in FCP. Basically the issue is this:  In FCP, if we were using a 1080p 23.98…or 720p 23.98 sequence, and we wanted to view this on a monitor that might not be able to do 23.98…all we had to do is set our VIDEO PLAYBACK to be 1080i29.97 (for 1080), or 720p 59.94 (for 720p), and FCP would add the proper pulldown and send out a 29.97 or 59.94 signal.  Playing back…
  • WHAT DID HE EDIT THAT WITH?

    shaneross
    8 May 2012 | 2:53 am
I know what you all are asking yourselves: “What did Shane edit that NAB wrap-up video with?” Plenty of you asked on Twitter, and I know you WOULD have asked on my blog in the comments…but I offered up the information before you could.  Because I knew you’d ask. So yes, I used Adobe Premiere CS5.5 to start the edit…mainly the inputting and organization part…and pulling the selects I wanted to use. Because that’s what I had on my laptop, and that’s what was on the work machine I used while I had some downtime.  But then I did the bulk of the…

Finally, another episode of THE EDIT BAY. This time it is a VIDEO podcast (sort of…it’s on Vimeo, courtesy of FreshDV). This video shows highlights of a few things I found interesting on the NAB 2012 show floor. The Edit Bay – an unexpected journey If you like the MEDIA OFFLINE shirt, you can find that here. If you like the BOLEX shirt, you can find that, and others, at Della Luce Style.
  • DEVALUED?

    shaneross
    13 Apr 2012 | 1:33 pm
A friend of mine who now works for a major NLE manufacturer recently emailed me with a philosophical question: “I’ve wondered openly objectively if the lower price points of FCPX or other NLEs doesn’t by extension create an expectation in professional circles (on behalf of clients, agencies, prod cos, etc.) that the skill set to drive such systems is devalued as well?” Yes….yes it does. But this is nothing new. This expectation came about years ago when Final Cut Pro started encroaching into the broadcast market.  FCP was much cheaper than Avid, therefore the…
  • TOP 10 THINGS I WILL MISS ABOUT FCP

    shaneross
    29 Mar 2012 | 5:17 pm
I started this blog in 2005, when I made my leap from editing on an Avid in standard definition…to editing with FCP in high definition…thus the name Little Frog in High Def (Little Frog being my Indian name from my youth). This blog was me talking about my foray into the world of HD specifically using Final Cut Pro…for broadcast TV shows. A diary of my successes and my failures…lessons I wanted to share so that people could learn from my…well, successes and failures. So now, with the EOL of FCP and me moving back to using Avid Media Composer…and Adobe…

  • Solar Odyssey: Camera position for 10 days, anyone?

    Philip
    15 May 2012 | 12:00 pm
Our camera person for Solar Odyssey, BT Corwin, isn’t able to join us until June 5, while we set sail May 27, so there’s about nine days where we’ll be one person down. We’ll probably get by – although there’s a reason I’m not a shooter – but it would be nice to have someone with reality/news experience who could manage the FS100 for that period. Not that it’s a particularly attractive offer because we can’t do more than cover costs for that phase. When we get a sale of the series we’ll be paying everyone involved decent wages,…
  • Final Cut Pro X ingests from multiple devices at the same time. [Updated]

    Philip
    14 May 2012 | 2:30 pm
Well that’s interesting. We noticed that in Final Cut Pro X’s Import from Camera window that, not only was the built-in camera always visible (it’s a MacBook Pro) even with external devices mounted, so Greg hypothesized that it would ingest from multiple sources at the same time. This, of course, would be highly desirable on The Solar Odyssey, so I decided to test it. Now, technically I can only view and select on one source at a time, but what happens in practice is that I select what I want from the device, tell FCP X to copy to the Event, and then move on to the next…
  • 7toX for Final Cut Pro 1.0.7

    12 May 2012 | 11:59 am
The latest release of 7toX for Final Cut Pro includes • Bug fix for AV clips where only the audio is used • Bug fix for still images and PDFs importing as black in a sequence • Bug fix for an extra gap clip added to the end of the primary storyline using XML from Premiere Pro • Bug fix for incorrect sequence duration using XML from Premiere Pro That is the third different fix for Premiere Pro XML!  Looking forward to the Automatic Duck influence in future releases!
  • Solar Odyssey: Lighting and Mounts

    Philip
    11 May 2012 | 3:53 pm
At one level, we could almost do without traditional lighting, particularly if I outfit the cabin with sufficiently soft light sources (like these LED strips that could line the ceiling and high walls), but I’m not sure I’d be satisfied. My first job was as Head Technician and lighting designer at the Newcastle Civic Theater, but for the five years before that I’d already (from age 16) run my own theater lighting business. (A small business, I should point out.) So, I’m a little fussy about the way things look. Hence, lighting. And logically LED, and therefore…
  • Solar Odyssey: Connectivity

    Philip
    10 May 2012 | 3:26 pm
There are a number of reasons why we need continuous (or as continuous as possible) Internet during the Solar Odyssey: Research on surrounding attractions and contact details Our multi-user logging app will be on a remote server (most likely) or connected via the public internet to the server on Ra (unlikely). It needs this topography to make the multi-user aspect work. Upload daily video blogs, pictures, and blog posts for SolarOdyssey.com and PhilipHodgetts.com We have need for connectivity on Ra for research and posting purposes, but also while off the boat for the logging app. On Boat In…

  • Nugen Audio Release A Pro Tools AudioSuite Loudness Plug-In

    Mike Thornton
    15 May 2012 | 3:04 am
We took a look at Nugen Audio’s loudness batch analysis correction application back in February 2012. Well now they have released an AudioSuite version of it that we can use in Pro Tools to prepare our files to meet the new standard. The guys at Nugen Audio have designed it to use a two-pass system in AudioSuite to analyse and then correct a file for loudness and true-peak overs to your specified target criteria. AudioSuite is perfect for this as integrated program loudness needs a whole file analysis, so the AudioSuite can save a lot of time if small edits are being made. AudioSuite…
